(NewsNation) — Many worldwide watched Bryan Kohberger's live sentencing hearing, which was held at the Ada County Courthouse in Boise, Idaho. And many formed their assessments of the convicted killer from home, speculating whether the outwardly emotionless 30-year-old is a psychopath.
"It's not really possible to diagnose somebody with something like psychopathy from an armchair," Dr. Gary Brucato, a clinical psychologist, told NewsNation's "Banfield. "But the reality is that certainly there are traits here that would warrant looking into that."
Each of the four victims' families gave victim impact statements during which Kohberger stared blankly ahead, occasionally blinking and offering little to no reaction.
Susan Constantine, a body language expert, said he had "stalker eyes" during the sentencing on Wednesday.
Constantine described his body language as "very controlled and in a very fixated position," almost in the sense that he was paranoid, she said.
"Every now and then, you might see a slight tightening of the lips or more slightly furrowed of the eyebrows... especially when he was listening to some of those impact statements where the anger you could see it start to slightly morph and the intensity started to raise," Constantine said.
"But it was ever so slight because he masks his emotions, and I think part of it is because he cannot show genuine emotion," she added.
Kohberger was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole for the murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin.
The defendant spoke only three words at the hearing: "I respectfully decline," telling the judge when asked if he'd like to say anything before receiving his fate.
“His movements and the way he was reacting made me think that for at least some of the time, he was reliving in his mind the images of killing these people and sort of enjoying it," Brucato said. "I think that there that you saw some of these little flickers that made him look alive, but I think he was sitting back and enjoying the memories.”
