Slated to take effect Friday, the cuts will start at 4% and eventually ramp up to 10%, a source briefed on the matter confirmed to NewsNation.

United Airlines confirmed it would cut 4% of its flights each day through the weekend.

"As we make those cancellations, we’re doing our best to minimize disruption for our customers and crews.  It’s important to keep in mind that the scale of cancellations is in line with a moderate winter storm — we are set up to handle this," a United spokesperson told NewsNation.

American Airlines and Delta Air Lines did not provide specifics on their plans to reduce flights but confirmed that anyone traveling in or out of the affected airports is entitled to a refund with no penalty. That includes passengers whose flights are canceled and those who choose to cancel their reservations.

As many as 1,800 flights and 268,000 seats could be affected by the FAA's plans, the Associated Press reported.
