(NewsNation) — The attorney of NBA star Terry Rozier, Jim Trusty, joined NewsNation to defend his client after he was arrested in connection with a federal probe into sports gambling and rigged poker games.

Rozier, a guard for the Miami Heat, is accused of participating in an illegal sports betting scheme using private insider NBA information, according to officials.

Rozier and other defendants “had access to private information known by NBA players or NBA coaches that was likely to affect the outcome of games or players’ performances, and provided that information to other co-conspirators in exchange for either a flat fee or a share of betting profits,” the indictment says.

Trusty said his client, who is currently on leave from the Heat, has not done anything wrong and was previously cleared by the NBA during an investigation into unusual betting activity in March 2023.

"If you're saying he's part of a conspiracy, he's got to be somebody who is trying to facilitate these bets against him performing well. That never happened," Trusty told NewsNation.

"This is a guy who got to the end of the season with the Hornets banged up ... there's a lot of people that were in a position to know that he was banged up.

"Whether or not he confided in some people or let it out that he was hurt, it doesn't matter. That's not the same as conspiring. And so I'm not seeing smoking gun evidence in the indictment," he added.

Trusty also suggested the federal government is using Rozier as a "trophy" for its investigation.
