(NewsNation) — The sheriff investigating the death of Ajike Owens at the hands of Susan Lorincz tells NewsNation the latter was far from the most upstanding resident in her neighborhood.
Lorincz, who was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2024, is at the center of a new Netflix documentary, “The Perfect Neighbor,” in which viewers see how a minor disagreement led to Lorincz fatally shooting her neighbor, Owens, in front of Owens' 9-year-old son in central Florida.
Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods, who investigated the killing of Owens, joined "Banfield" to discuss the documentary, which explores the dispute leading to the killing through bodycam footage.
"The only thing I always said is she was far from 'the perfect neighbor,'" Woods said of Lorincz.
Lorincz killed Owens on June 2, 2023, when she fired a single round from her .380-caliber handgun, which went through a closed door and fatally struck Owens, according to investigators.
Some have suggested that Lorincz and Owens' races, white and Black, respectively, may have contributed to the shooting.
"Do I believe that Lawrence was probably racist? There's a very good possibility. Do I think (the shooting) was racially motivated? Absolutely not," Woods told NewsNation.
Regarding the Netflix documentary, Woods believes it upholds the reality of what occurred, given its usage of bodycam video.
"It's all body cameras. It's all videos. So you can't really make up anything. You get to see the raw stuff of what my deputies dealt with on a regular basis."
