More rain expected in Northeast after floods kill 2 in New Jersey

(NewsNation) — Flash floods swept through New Jersey and New York late Monday night into Tuesday, swamping subway stations, grounding planes and downing trees.

The National Weather Service expects more rain to hit the area Tuesday, with a chance of thunderstorms present throughout much of the day.

2 dead in New Jersey due to floods

Two people were killed in Plainfield, New Jersey, during flash floods, the city confirmed Tuesday.

Their vehicle was swept away "during the height of the storm," and they were pronounced dead at the scene, the city said.

“All of Plainfield grieves this latest loss,” Mayor Adrian O. Mapp said in a statement.

At least one person was hospitalized from storm-related injuries after a tree fell on them in New York's Harlem neighborhood, officials confirmed to NewsNation affiliate WPIX.

Subway tunnels flooded on at least three New York City transit lines Monday as water poured into train cars and forced service to be temporarily shut down. Commuter lines in and out of Grand Central Terminal also reported delays.

In video footage, a conductor can be heard saying, "I’m gonna call this one in, I can’t open the doors, it’s not safe."

"The train conductor was hilarious. He came on the loudspeaker saying ‘It’s only Monday’ and ‘I don’t get paid enough for this,'" the video owner told Storyful.

The North Jersey Coast Line rail service was suspended in both directions Tuesday due to a fallen tree, according to NJ Transit. 

Floods ground flights at major Northeast airports

As of early Tuesday morning, nearly 250 flights had been canceled out of the area's three major airports, and 166 have been delayed, according to FlightAware.

The storms caused more than 2,000 delayed or canceled flights in and out of John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport on Monday.

Ground stops were issued Monday — and have since been lifted — at all three.

Flash floods: New Jersey in state of emergency

“I am declaring a State of Emergency given flash flooding and high levels of rainfall in parts of the state. Please stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Stay safe, New Jersey,” New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said Monday on social media.

In Plainfield, New Jersey, multiple cars — and at least one 18-wheeler — were left stranded in rising floodwaters Monday.

Crews rescued people from at least 30 homes in North Plainfield, Mayor Lawrence La Ronde told local media.

TSA ending ‘shoes off’ policy at airport checkpoints

One car drove through a barrier in Plainfield, crashing into a log lying in the middle of the road. The driver told WPIX he didn't see the barriers due to the flooding.

At least three people died in New Jersey during flooding earlier this month, according to the Associated Press.

The deluge in the northeast coincided with heavy rain and flooding in parts of central Texas, which killed more than 130 people over the Fourth of July weekend.
