(NewsNation) — Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland died by suicide after a police chase, local authorities announced Thursday. He was 24.
According to a news release, police in Frisco, Texas, joined state troopers to find a car that had evaded their pursuit. Troopers caught up with the vehicle, but only after it crashed. Police said the car was empty when they found it, but they spotted Kneeland's body nearby with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Frisco police said during the search, they learned Kneeland had expressed suicidal thoughts.
"Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family," the Cowboys said in a statement.
Kneeland's agent, Jonathan Perzley, said he died on Wednesday night.
"I watched him fight his way from a hopeful kid at Western Michigan with a dream to being a respected professional for the Dallas Cowboys. Marshawn poured his heart into every snap, every practice, and every moment on the field," Perzley said.

Kneeland recovered a blocked punt to score his only career touchdown Monday against the Arizona Cardinals. He was a second-round draft pick last year and had played in 18 games.
The NFL is in contact with the Cowboys and is offering counseling resources to teammates and coaches, the league said in a statement.
