An estate management firm that took over the owners’ board at the fire-hit Wang Fuk Court will hold a “briefing session” for residents on financial matters such as compensation and refunds, Hong Kong’s home affairs chief has said.

This will be the first time that estate management firm Hop On Management Company will meet with residents since it was appointed by the government in January to take over as the “administrator” of the estate after the owners’ corporation board was dissolved, following the massive fire in November that killed 168 people and displaced thousands.
Hop On is a subsidiary of real estate giant Chinachem Group.
Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs Alice Mak said on Wednesday evening that Hop On Management Company will need to find a time slot that avoids clashes with the investigation hearings on the deadly fire, which are currently underway and that many residents are attending.
The company would also need to ensure the meeting does not coincide with dates that residents of the seven fire-hit blocks will return to the estate to collect their belongings. Last week, the government announced arrangements for them to go back and take their valuables during assigned timeslots from mid-April to early May.

The authorities have yet to schedule a date for the briefing session.
Mak’s announcement follows a petition signed by hundreds of Wang Fuk Court homeowners calling for a meeting with the government-appointed administrator.
Speaking to reporters, Mak said that Hop On was processing more than 800,000 documents from residents after having taken over from the owners’ board, and will handle refunds for renovation and building maintenance deposits.
“After taking over documents from the original owners’ corporation, [Hop On] has to comb through the payments made by each household,” she said.
