Bryan Kohberger victim Ethan Chapin's family not attending sentencing

(NewsNation) —The family of Ethan Chapin, one of the four Idaho college students murdered in an off-campus home by Bryan Kohberger, will not be making a victim impact statement at his sentencing hearing Wednesday.

The family had previously said they were content with the plea deal prosecutors made with Kohberger earlier this month. Kohberger agreed to serve four life sentences for the 2022 murders of Chapin, along with Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen and Xana Kernodle. 

Jim and Stacy Chapin, the parents of Ethan Chapin, said they finally have “closure” with the plea deal, in an interview with the "Today Show" last week. 

“If I could physically do a handstand at that time, I would probably do one, because I am so ready for it to be done,” Jim Chapin said of the moment he found out about the plea deal.

His wife, Stacy, said, “There were so many kids, including our own, that had been subpoenaed that no longer have this hanging over their heads. I mean, we just all get to go live our life.” 

The Goncalves family opposed the deal, saying it was secretive and hurried, and are expected to make a statement in court. 

The Chapin family appears to be the only one to publicly announce that they will not attend Kohberger’s sentencing.
