YORK COUNTY, Pa. (NewsNation) — Three police officers have died and two others are severely wounded after a shooting in Pennsylvania.

The officers were following up on an investigation in North Codorus Township, about 115 miles west of Philadelphia, when five officers were shot.

The surviving officers are in critical condition and the gunman is dead after being shot by police, according to Colonel Christopher Paris with Pennsylvania State Police.

"The grief will be unbearable, but we will bear it," Paris said as he gave an update on the shooting.

"This kind of violence isn't OK. We need to do better as a society," Gov. Josh Shapiro said at the news conference.

What led up to the shooting wasn't immediately made public as the investigation gets underway.

Nearby schools were on lockdown as a precaution and the Consulate of Mexico in Philadelphia said in a social media post that it was “monitoring the incident” in Pennsylvania and issued “a precautionary alert for our community."

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were headed to the scene to help local law enforcement.

"Violence against law enforcement is a scourge on our society and never acceptable. Pray for the officers involved," she wrote.
